HOW TO APPLY

To apply for Federal Stafford loans and Institutional scholarships and loans, all applicants must complete both the FAFSA and the UVA School of Medicine Application.  Please also see the forms page and the financial aid timeline

 

 Required documents from all applicants:
  • FAFSA on the Web: www.fafsa.ed.gov  (UVA FAFSA Code is 003745)
    Before filling out your FAFSA, complete the FAFSA worksheets.  Your parents do not need to sign the FAFSA. 

  • UVA School Of Medicine Financial Aid Application
    The application is now online.  We have created two worksheets to help you gather the information you will need to complete this application: A student information worksheet and a parent information worksheet.

    Once you have done the worksheets and are ready to do the application, c
    lick here, then click on "SIS Login" and log in with your computing ID (ex. mst3k) and password.
    Entering students should have received an email with instructions to obtain a password.  If you were admitted more than two weeks ago and have not received this email, please contact Tonya Shifflett.
    Returning students should use their existing NetBadge login information.

    Once logged in, go to the Student Center in Self Service and complete the financial aid application.
      Entering students: be sure to provide an email address that you check frequently, that will continue to work throughout the summer.

  • Previous year U.S. Tax Returns
    We will need a signed copy of a federal (not state) tax return, including all Schedules and W2s, for every person whose financial aid information is reported on your FAFSA and UVA application (in most cases, this is the student and the student's parents - please see below for exceptions).

Whose information do I provide on the FAFSA and UVA Form?

Federal Aid Only - Student / Spouse
Institutional Aid - Student / Spouse / Parents (see below for exceptions) 

Deadlines:

  • Priority deadline for entering students: April 1st.  Entering students who have all of their documents submitted by April 1st will receive a preliminary award letter via email by May 1st.  To be sure that your FAFSA information arrives at the financial aid office by April 1st, we recommend that you submit it online by March 15th.

  • Priority deadline for returning students: April 15th.  Returning students who have all of their documents submitted by April 15th will receive their preliminary award letter within 4-8 weeks.

  • Read your preliminary award letter carefully for instructions on how to accept the federal and/or institutional loans offered, and to select a federal lender.  Completing these tasks by July 1st will ensure that your financial aid will be reflected on your tuition bill.

How to Submit:

  • Submit your FAFSA online

  • Submit your School of Medicine Financial Aid Application online.

Exceptions:

  • If you are married, and your spouse is not a student, you need only submit your and your spouse's information.  If your spouse is a student, you will still need to submit your parents' information.

  • All other exceptions are made on a case-by-case basis by the Director of Financial Aid.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY?

To be eligible to apply for federal and institutional aid while attending the University of Virginia School of Medicine, an applicant must:
a. be a United States citizen or permanent resident
b. be enrolled at least half-time (full-time for Federal Title VII programs)
c. be making satisfactory academic progress as defined by the school
d. not be in default on a federal loan or owe a refund on a federal grant
e. be registered with Selective Service if required to do so
