Continuing Medical Education

Continuing Medical Education (CME) is part of a learning continuum initiated in undergraduate education, intensified during graduate medical education, and maintained throughout the life of the health care professional. CME links lifelong learning to the research, teaching, and patient care and public service missions of the School of Medicine and the Health System. The Office of Continuing Medical Education of the School of Medicine/Health System is an ACCME accredited sponsor of continuing medical education for physicians and other health professionals.
UVa-sponsored CME programs include specialty and sub-specialty departmental conferences, special seminars, international, national, and regional meetings, and includes activities developed with other organizations and specialty societies, mini-fellowship opportunities, and enduring materials (self-paced learning).  In addition to programming delivered through traditional formats, the Office of Continuing Medical Education participates in the development of educational activities delivered through the Internet, CD-ROM, and videoconferencing technologies. The incorporation of advanced technologies in the design and delivery of health-related educational programs will allow sponsors of CME to provide education based on the needs of the learners that relates directly to physician clinical practice, and to both clinical and educational outcomes. The University of Virginia Office of Continuing Medical Education is actively participating in new collaborative CME initiatives that involve multiple organizations to address significant public health issues such as smoking cessation, asthma and COPD and MRSA and improve healthcare team performance and patient outcomes.
As a medical school whose service area includes a major rural region in the Commonwealth, UVa's outreach CME services are provided to large numbers of health professionals who practice medicine in remote areas, and for whom access to continuing medical education is limited because of the constraints of time, geography, or limited local availability. The CME Affiliate and Outreach Program specifically works with community hospitals and other healthcare organizations to provide quality education to physicians in their local communities. Under this umbrella organization, extensive CME is provided to physicians and health professionals within the Commonwealth.
